Even the best "state of the art" ones are not completely sealed throughout their lifetimes and a certain amount of chemical and metal leakage will occur. The situation is far worse for older or less stringently controlled dump sites. The vaporization of metallic mercury and dimethylene mercury is also of concern. Uncontrolled fires may begin at such landfills, posing additional health and environmental risks. |
