The process of CRT disposal is very time and labor intensive, firstly the tube has to be manually removed for the shell, then it’s cleaned of any metals or debris. Secondly the vacuum is broken and then the tube is cut in half. The mash and other materials held within are removed from each tube by hand and eventually the remaining lead filled glass is crashed. Boxes of crushed glass are then shipped of to undergo a range of processes to remove the lead and make the glass safe for disposal or reuse. Thankfully due to the massive numbers of CRT units being disposed of the cost to you is significantly low.
